Welcome to Impressions of Nature, the website of outdoor photographer John Pennoyer.

This website has dual purposes. It contains examples of my photography and offers educational articles. I love to share the knowledge that I have gained over the last several years and by opening the “Field Notes” tab you will find information regarding field techniques, workshops, classes, equipment reviews, etc. Under the gallery tab you will find the “Feature Photo" which will have one or a series of images that were taken recently with explanations on my equipment and exposure etc. If you browse through the gallery and don’t find what you are looking for, please e-mail me as I have thousands of images in my stock file.

I was born and raised in Kalispell, MT and living in “God’s Country” it was only natural for me to be in the outdoors whether it was hunting, fishing or hiking. When I moved to Minnesota to go to school I yearned to get back to the outdoors and my venue was bow-hunting. This provided the peace and serenity of the north woods; however, I needed more.

In 1983 I joined the Minnesota Nature Photography club and purchased my first 35mm camera, a Nikon FE. My goal was, of course, to capture images of Minnesota’s magnificent whitetails. But through the club and its members I broadened my horizons and began noticing pretty wildflowers, prairies, and lakes. I enjoy photographing the delicate wild flowers as much as capturing an image of a black bear. My choice of equipment has always been Nikon cameras and lenses with the conversion to digital in 2003. Digital photography has totally opened up new horizons for the outdoor photographer.

Although much of my photography is done in solitude, my wife Lynne and I love to travel the State of Minnesota for everything that it has to offer. She loves to find a nice rock to sit on and read a book while I am waiting for that perfect light to strike my subject.

My images have been used by many magazines and calendars such as Bowhunter, Peterson Bowhunting, Game and Fish, Lake Country Journal, Minnesota Conservation Volunteer, Weatherguide Calendars and many others.

Enjoy browsing through my web site and it will be updated on a regular basis. Please feel free to sign the "guest book" located under the guest tab!
Good Shooting
